Jasmine Coan, known by clients as DJ Bella J, leads the way in Upstate New York music and nightlife. Born in Germany and raised in Brooklyn, she moved to Syracuse years ago and built her DJ empire from the ground up.
As a graduate of Cazenovia College and Le Moyne College, DJ Bella J studied accounting and worked in the business world for several years, but her itch to perform and make music never went away. Finally, at age 30, she followed her dream to work as a disc jockey.
DJ Bella J had the work ethic and determination to learn every facet of the music industry. She learned to scratch, mix and host at New York City's prestigious Scratch DJ Academy in 2012. There, she absorbed the history of music and carved out her path, following in the footsteps of DJ pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and Grand Wizzard Theodore. As a natural talent, she quickly earned residencies at downtown clubs in both Syracuse and Ithaca.
In the last eight years, DJ Bella J has established herself as a regular presence at corporate events, community gatherings, schools, weddings, birthdays and private parties across New York. She demonstrates professionalism and creativity well beyond the scope of a start-up business.
She has opened for rapper Fetty Wap and up-and-coming artist Sydney Renae. She has DJed for the legendary DJ Scratch on his Scratch Vision show, alongside legendary DJ Mister Cee in New York City and internationally in countries such as Aruba, Bahamas and Dominican Republic.
In 2016, Sisters Empowering Sisters recognized her for the Image Initiative Program’s award for empowering young women. The Post-Standard and syracuse.com featured her work as the only professional female DJ in the city, and as a prime example of why full-time DJs are always your best option to hire. She graced the front page of the newspaper's Empire section and educated readers on how pro DJs must elevate and diversify Syracuse's music scene.
Since then, DJ Bella J has become the official DJ for the Syracuse University Women’s Basketball team and Destiny USA. She also DJ’s for other organizations such as the SU Men’s Basketball team, American Heart Association of Greater Syracuse, Gwen Inc., Downtown Committee of Syracuse, Hope for Heather, The Upstate Chapter of the ALS Association, Sisters Empowering Sisters, Girl Scouts of America, Inc. and many more. To add to her list of accomplishments, DJ Bella J is now the proud owner of “On The One”, the very first DJ Center in Central New York and conveniently located at Destiny USA!
The mission of On The One – DJ Center is to provide a space dedicated to anyone looking to explore the art of DJing, to train and mentor aspiring DJs, especially young girls and women, to be a center of resources for the DJ's in the Central NY area, and a place anyone can go to book a DJ.
In 2021, On The One – DJ Center won the top prize of the KeyBank Pitch Your Pivot Competition, hosted the very first DJ festival at the Great New York State Fair and launched a podcast called “Between The Decks”. In 2022, On The One won the WISE Women’s Business Center – Retail Pitch Competition and became a Shark Tank contestant.
DJ Bella J runs a youth mentor program called “On The One – Sister Circle”. The goal of this program is to strengthen the relationship between black and brown girls and their mothers and/or caregivers through workshops, retreats, and community activism.
DJ Bella J is also a board member to the Syracuse Police Athletic League and PGR foundation.
